Подобное положение сохраняется и сегодня. Индеец навахо Дуг Хикмэн так написал об этом всего несколько лет назад: «Получить информацию о навахских колдунах довольно сложно. Навахо не говорят о силах темной стороны своей культуры, опасаясь возмездия. Мои старшие соплеменники бранили меня, отговаривая писать о колдунах. По их словам, если навахские колдуны узнают, что я написал о них, они нашлют на меня зло… До сих пор навахо очень боятся колдунов… Считается, что чужак, задающий вопросы о навахском колдовстве, ищет неприятности и может накликать беду. Ведь чужак, задающий вопросы, может оказаться Ходящим в шкурах (колдуном), высматривающим себе новую жертву».
